Haha, get it. "God-tier" cause he's-- oh nevermind

"THERE'S AN ANIME LIKE THAT" PERMISSIONS POST

Tokyo Xanadu is set in an alternative universe of modern day Earth. Which basically means it's MOSTLY like modern day Earth but some things are different in the timeline here or there. But because of this and because Nihon Falcom is a small company, they basically got royalty-free versions of just about anything you'd find in 2015 (Xiphones instead of iPhones, Mumbawamba instead of roombas, etc) - though I'll probably just use normal brand names for stuff not covered in canon I can't be assed to come up with fake names for McDonalds and Starbucks ok.

But on that note, Jun here is a big ol' anime nerd. He reads manga/light novels, binges shows, buys merch, cosplays -- he's pretty dang shameless about it. And since he watches more shows than Falcom has time to make up, I thought it'd be fun to give players a chance to make up some off-brand anime versions of their canons that Jun can reference in conversations.

Guidelines
  • These anime can either be pretty close to their canon or wildly off base. Like comically off base.
  • Characters in these fake anime can be SIMILAR to actual characters, but Jun shouldn't be able to recognize anyone from actually being from an anime (Ex: there can be an anime about a stretchy pirate, but it wouldn't be actually Luffy and Jun wouldn't be able to look at Luffy and go "oh that's Luffy from One Piece"). The only exception to this is if its characters from other falcom games (Trails, Ys)- which I'll talk to them about that if one shows up.
  • I'm not interested in actually fourth-walling, so I'll only have Jun reference plot twists that you approve of. Otherwise I'll assume the anime he saw went in a different direction.

For example some anime series that are mentioned in Xanadu are:
  • Magical Girl Alisa - A very popular magical girl show that stars the cast from another Falcom game, but is actually nothing like Cold Steel plot-wise. It's pretty over-the-top, but fans swear it's good.
  • Go Go Tank Girl - A slice of life anime...but set in the MILITARY.
  • Grumpy Cat Kagemaru! - It's basically Hello Kitty with grumpy cat.

    Player Name: Yuff
Character/Canon: Elliot Craig/Trails of Cold Steel

Fake Anime Name: Magical Girl Alisa
    Genre: MAGICAL GIRL
Brief Plot Synopsis: The story of a high school girl named Alisa who is actually a magical girl that fights against an evil organization to protect peace and love! Her arch nemesis is the Demon Prince Rean who has an evil right arm. On their days off they hang out at McDonalds.
Off the Rails Meter: It's a 10. It is not even remotely like Cold Steel besides Crow liking fish burgers.
Extra: This is where I'd go into details about random lore but you get the gist.

    Player Name: Anita

    Fake Anime Name: Menma
    Genre: Unabashedly awful shounen
Brief Plot Synopsis: Menma Namizuki is a young boy who dreams of becoming the most well-respected samurai in the city of trees. He is obsessed with tsukemen and has a nine-headed shiba inu sealed inside of him. Follow along with him as he trains and grows with his friends, Haruka and Sousuke!

    Player Name: Rinne
Character/Canon: Natori Shuuichi/Natsume's Book of Friends

Fake Anime Name: The Exorcist Files
    Genre: bog-standard shounen
Brief Plot Synopsis: Second-year high school student Hiroshi Kawamoto has always been able to see youkai, but it’s not until he meets mysterious first-year Makoto Igari that he learns that there are people devoted to fighting them. Hiroshi has better-than-average spiritual power but has no idea how to use it, while Makoto has been steeped in an exorcist family since he was born and is widely regarded as a prodigy within the community. Training montages and monsters-of-the-week ensue as Hiroshi tries to balance his mundane school life with his evenings hunting down dangerous youkai, all while putting up with his rivalry with proud-but-dismissive Makoto. (aka it’s the anime Natori thought he was in as a high schooler)
Off the Rails Meter: Like an 8-- canon is a quiet shoujo series about forming bonds with others and the beauty/bittersweet of the ephemeral, even if the exorcist chapters tend to lean towards the more dangerous youkai. Some of the youkai might be familiar but it’s much more about FIGHTING!!! due to the genre shift.
Extra: “some of the youkai might be familiar” liiiiike:
-there's a headless ghost woman in the onsen episode whose head is sealed somewhere in the inn; she's smashing the place up trying to find it
-a big three-horned youkai that's targeting exorcists prompts Hiroshi and Makoto's first successful teamup
    -creepy giant wooden dolls
-there's a youkai that's obsessed with stealing Makoto's left ear; it's incredibly ineffectual and is treated as a running gag
-there's an episode where Hiroshi and Makoto are locked in a sealed room together and have to cooperate to undo the trap. Afterwards they go apple picking together. It spawns a lot of fanart.

    Player Name: Steve
    Character/Canon: IG-11 | Star Wars

    Fake Anime Name: Rocksteady Desperado
    Genre: Sci-Fi Western
Brief Plot Synopsis: The off-beat adventures of Sly Schröder, an intergalactic bounty hunter (or desperado), and his fellow band of misfits: the grizzled veteran Cole Train, the femme fatale Scarlett Letter, and the eccentric child genius Revolutionary Tyler. (Plus their chubby pug, Uno.) They travel aboard their ship, a clunky old freighter called the Rocksteady, and take on a variety of odd jobs, fighting villains of the week while offering the occasional glimpse at Sly’s checkered past.
Off the Rails Meter: 8. The fight choreography and the music are pretty wild. It’s very highly acclaimed for its slick aesthetic and impressive soundtrack.
Extra: Try to make it through the ending without crying. Mando couldn’t.

    Player Name: Marion
    Character/Canon: Mandalorian / Star Wars

Fake Anime Name: Galactic Conquest The Series
    Genre: Sci-Fi/Adventure
Brief Plot Synopsis: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

    GALACTIC CONQUEST

The long running popular franchise, now brought to life through Japanese animation. Divided into three trilogies and more, dive deep into an entire star system's worth of stories.

In the original trilogy, watch the adventures of George Starkiller, a young mechanic who discovers a great destiny to fight the tyrannical Cosmic Federation and discover his secret origins. In the prequel trilogy, follow the journey of his mother Dame Dala that led her down the path of evil. In the final trilogy, a girl with no history discovers how to forge her own and battles against Jin Ichi in her search to find his uncle - the legendary Starkiller himself.

The adventures don't stop there however, with spin-off shows such as "War of the Replicas", "Galactic Conquest: Mutineers", and "The Troubadour" (about a mysterious musician who adopts a baby animal) available on dvd as well.

Off the Rails Meter: 5 - make shit up, J.J. Abrams sure did.
Extra: every single movie starts with an overly long expository opening crawl because it has to.
