EARLY LIFE
Jun Kohinata was born in Japan in 2003. He doesn't know much about his birth parents, as he has no memory of them. All he knows is information he was given second hand, and that's mostly they were petty criminals who never really made anything of themselves. Their rap sheet contained the typical stuff: drugs, sex work, theft, running scams, potential gang activity, etc. His birth had been unplanned, and while they attempted to keep him and raise him for awhile, they simply weren't ready to be parents. That feeling only intensified when Jun's telekinetic powers began to manifest around the time he was entering the toddler stage. Neither of them were all that familiar with the paranormal, so having a baby who could throw things with his mind caused a lot of fright.
That's when Krusnik entered the picture. They approached Jun's parents, presenting themselves as a charitable adoption agency. They told his parents that they were familiar with Jun's abilities, and if they gave up custody to them. Whether his parents agreed because they sincerely believed it'd give their child a better life, or for their own selfish motivations... it'll never be known. What is known is that about a week after they gave up their parental rights, Jun's parents disappeared without a trace, never to be seen again.
LIFE AT KRUSNIK
In truth, Krusnik was as far from a charitable adoption agency as one could get. Rather, they were dangerous cult that kidnapped and experimented on children that had the potential to further their own goals of obtaining divine power. Jun in particular had caught their eye due to his past life becoming a Seal Knight for the none other than the Abrahamic God Himself. The leaders of Krusnik hoped that not only could they trigger his past life's ability, but they wanted mold Jun into a loyal agent of Krusnik so he'd use that power for them.
And so, when Krusnik got their hands on Jun, they brought him to their main facility in Eastern Europe. While Krusnik provided basic necessities for the kids to survive, Jun was initially far too young to fend for himself. Unwilling to lose their highly valuable asset and equally unwilling to act as parental figures themselves- they decided to hand him off to two older kids who had already to proven be both useful and cooperative with their goals: Anastasia "Ana" Fabre and Harumasa "Haru" Asaba.
Fortunately, being kids themselves, this plan actually managed to work thanks to both Ana and Haru being naturally good with younger kids. Jun grew up viewing the two as his older siblings and was very attached to them. Ana, the oldest and most avid believer in Krusnik, would teach her younger brothers how to fight and defend themselves so they'd make it through Krusnik's various trials. Meanwhile Haru, who secretly had growing suspicions of Krusnik's true nature, would look after Jun in other ways and would subtly try to veer the kid away from becoming devoted to Krusnik. Haru's efforts had mixed results, as while Jun knew their lives weren't really pleasant, he had no frame of reference for how else life should be or how bad their situation actually was. However, between the seeds of doubt Haru planted and his siblings providing Jun the love and emotional fulfillment a child typically needs - Jun wound up refraining from trying to form any attachments to the adults who ran the facility.
When Jun was six year old, he began taking part of the combat trials that Krusnik held. These trials usually consisted sending the kids into a spirit realm labyrinth to face various monsters. These trials were brutal, and it wasn't uncommon for a kid to perish during them. Jun managed to survive, having a natural knack for fighting as well as his sister's teachings. While Ana and Haru did all they could to make sure as many kids as possible survived these trials, but the younger Jun had many less means to do that. So instead, he coped by withdrawing into himself. While he was never cruel to anyone, he was colder and more detached than Haru or Ana. He'd avoid getting close to any other kid unless he felt they had a chance of surviving, sometimes not even speaking to them until they survived their first battle.
Which as the years passed, a few kids did manage to do that. Among these kids there were: Ash, a younger feisty kid who loved to fight and read; Zephyr, a quiet boy who had a fixation with knives; and Luke, a boy who was definitely something of the baby of the group. Over time, they became something akin to younger siblings. But even as he got older, Jun never quite took to the warm and loving older sibling role like Ana and Haru did so naturally. Rather, he tended to watch silently and choose to find subtle, thoughtful ways to help his family out without drawing attention to himself.
For his first eleven years, this was the life he knew. A life he didn't really think to question, as it was all he knew- and all he thought he'd ever know.
He never anticipated how abruptly and how drastically it'd all change.
THE RAID
When he was eleven years old, the leaders of Krusnik were growing impatient at Jun's seeming lack of progress. Nearly a decade, and Jun hadn't shown a single sign of his divine potential. Determined to get results, they decided to see if they could force the matter by use of a new drug they'd been developing, meant artificially heighten a person's spirit power. Sure, it had the risk of causing insanity or even killing the young boy- but it felt like a risk worth taking in their eyes.
Not that Jun was aware of any of this plan. Instead, when he got called away to one of the medical labs, he figured it was yet another one of their exams he didn't understand. He definitely didn't notice they waited until Ana was away on mission to do this either. And before he could notice any red flags, they had given him a sedative and began putting restraints on him- just to be on the safe side.
But it wasn't safe enough, as that's when all hell broke loose.
You see, Jun's generation hadn't been the first children to suffer under Krusnik's cruel thumb. In fact, the cult had been around long enough that now some of the earlier victims that managed to survive and escape were now adults themselves. One of them, Abel Nightroad, had a vendetta against the cult after their methods had resulted in the death of Abel's brother. And after years of searching, Abel was able to gain the whereabouts of Krusnik's main facility from an unknown source. They had even provided him the exact means to get past Krusnik's security undetected.
And once he was inside? He began killing every Krusnik operative he could find, indiscriminately. Thanks to a vampiric possession and his own training, nothing seemed to slow him down.
Nothing... until he happened upon the lab that Jun was in.
After killing the Krusnik members in the room, Abel happened to notice Jun on the medical table. A malnourished and defenseless child, clearly about to undergo one of Krusniks's cruel medical experiments like his brother had done-- it was in that moment that Abel made a decision, to forgo his vengeance in favor of saving this child. He got Jun out of the restraints and picked him up, carrying him out of the facility.
Jun all the while was too sedated to really do much. All he knew was there were red splatters everywhere, and there was someone carrying him. He couldn't even warn Abel that there was other children in the facility- not until it was far, far too late.
It was only much later, when the sedatives wore off, did Jun find out what happened. You see, amongst all the chaos, some of the Krusnik agents decided they didn't want to risk the kids getting out-- so they responded by forcing them into the Spirit Realm gate they'd use for combat trials.... except, without any weapons- leaving them utterly defenseless. As far as Jun could tell... he was the only kid to make it out alive that day.
Jun had been saved... at the cost of everything he'd ever known.
A "NORMAL" LIFE
Abel, realizing that every surviving Krusnik member would be after him, decided it'd be best to get as far away from Krusnik as possible. Through pulling a lot of strings and some luck, he managed to get him and Jun to Kaisou, a medium sized city in one of the less noteworthy parts of the US. There, Abel hoped that maybe he and Jun could get something neither of them ever had- a normal life.
At first, progress was slow. Jun missed his siblings, and he didn't trust Abel. For the first few months, he viewed Abel was a monster that ripped Jun away from his old life. He knew Ana had been away from the facility that day, so he held onto the hope that she'd come find him. That she'd take him back and it would turn out his other siblings would be okay.
But Ana never came.
Over time, slowly but surely, Abel began to earn his trust. It'd be small things- behaviors that Jun would notice were different from the adults from Krunisk. Unlike the adults in the facility, Abel was kind and gentle. When Jun misbehaved or made a mistake, he'd speak to him calmly rather than administer harsh punishments. He always tried to look after Jun's wellbeing, even when it came at the cost of his own. And sometimes, he'd say or do things that remind him of Ana and Haru. Some days were better than others, and sometimes there were setbacks-- but eventually, Abel won his trust.
Once Abel won over Jun's trust, it was time for Jun to experience the world he'd never gotten to see before. Abel would try to expose Jun to all the new experiences he could: foods, games, places, animals- there were an endless number of things Jun had no idea existed, or thought they were just in stories. Jun had always been a curious kid, but his time in Krusnik taught him it was best to keep his head down and not ask questions. But now that he was away from Krusnik's fist, the realization of just how many things the "outside world" had to offer reignited that long suppress curious streak of his. He started to make a point to try as many new things as he could, using it as a way to learn not just about the world, but about himself as well.
Of course, leaving the overly naive Jun to run completely wild wouldn't be good for the kid either, so Abel decided to start taking Jun to church to help ground and guide him in ways that Abel couldn't. Which thanks to the head priest, Father Hansa, having their own past run-in with Krusnik and thus had some understanding of Jun's situation, it did just that. Through the church, Jun gained stability in his life. The parish taught him codes of ethics to live by, not just rules for survival. They gave him a sense of community through the church activities, and a sense of purpose as he got age-appropriate tasks to help with around the Cathedral - all of which he fulfilled with the utmost dedication. He quickly became a favorite among the parish, with the nuns and priests doting on him like a child they'd never have themselves.
As for God.... while Jun had heard of Him before through Krusnik, it'd always been through the lens of the power that He had- and what use He could be for the cult. It was worlds apart from the loving and compassionate God that the priests spoke of. As he listened to the stories... Jun never really bought into the "all powerful" aspects of God, not after everything he experienced. But he was drawn in by the idea of God being a companion that was always at your side. For a child who was still grappling with the loss of his siblings and frequently felt alone in this new life, it was a truly comforting notion.
And so, during his prayers and when he was alone, Jun began to talk to God like one would talk to a friend. He'd tell the Lord about his day, and asked the Lord about His own (not that He ever responded). He'd share his laughs and joys with Him, as well as his sorrows and fears. He'd never ask anything for himself, just talk to Him. During Bible study, he'd lovingly tease God for things he didn't agree with ("really? You had a hang up over fabric blends? that's a little silly isn't it?") and praised Him for things he did. And most of all... he'd try his best to empathize with the deity. After all, it couldn't be easy being God. It couldn't be easy, being all His own without anyone quite like him. "It's okay if You don't want to talk, I understand. I'm not much of a talker either," Jun would tell the God "But if You ever want company, I'm here for You."
He had no idea at the time just how much that silent God had been listening.
The years passed by. With each new day and new experience, Jun grew and flourished compared to the withered child he was under Krusnik. He started smiling more, started laughing more. He gained hobbies and interests, such as anime and fashion. In contrast to the dreary facility he'd grown up in, he grew to love the beautiful aesthetics that nature and art brought. His slowly built trust for Abel blossomed into love, and by the time Jun was 12 years old, he started referring to him as his Dad and took the surname of "Nightroad" to reflect that. He spent his middle school years being homeschooled to get caught up on everything he missed, and then after a trial run at a summer camp, he was then sent to Kaisou public high school to get a normal education.
Though while things were worlds better than his time in Krusnik, it wasn't all sunshine and roses. There was always the risk that Krusnik would hunt them down, so Jun and Abel always had to be cautious of that. They'd avoid telling people anything that'd expose them, always fearful that a single misstep could bring those monsters to their door. As such, while Jun was happy to tell God things... he learned to avoid telling humans much of anything about himself- which really impeded his ability to connect and make friends his own age. His past with Krusnik, the memories of his siblings, and all the feelings that came with that... they got buried deep within himself.
Not only that, but after Abel's own traumatic experiences with the paranormal, truly didn't want anything to do with it. He wanted to live as normal of a life as possible, and he tried to impress that on Jun as well. Jun tried to go along with it out of love for his father... but it never quite worked out. Sure Jun had suffered a lot and technically it was because of the paranormal, but... Jun couldn't never bring himself to dislike that side of the world. Rather, he felt drawn to it- and so when he hit that rebellious teenage phase, he began to find ways to pursue it without his father's knowledge through the internet and other places.
This is how he met his best and first real friend, August- a guy who was into fashion and was also really vocal about his own involvement in the paranormal. He'd listen to August talk about that stuff, all while keeping quiet about his own past involvement in that world. And it was also through August that he began to learn about topics regarding his own sexuality and gender, coming to realize that he was attracted to men and not quite cisgendered. Fortunately, the people in Jun's live was pretty accepting when he came out, as his father loved him unconditionally- and the church? Well, the parish wasn't really the most avid traditionalist of parishs anyway. They weren't going to say anything to the Pope if Jun wasn't.
Beyond that, his time during high school was quiet. He was an average student who tended to keep to himself. He got along with people, but he didn't make many friends outside of casual friends in anime club. After graduation, he went to Kaisou University where he initially intended to major in art and become an animator - a job that appealed to some of his interests, but didn't have anything to do with the supernatural, like his father wanted. His first semester at college proved to be much like his time at high school- quiet and pretty unremarkable.
But then, a couple weeks after his 18th birthday- a mysterious app appeared on his phone, followed by a glowing cross mark on his arm. It was now, with Jun far away from any controlling clutches and old enough to know to avoid such traps- did the Lord finally choose to reveal Himself.
